It’s been just six months since Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave birth to a baby girl. Ever since patriarch Amitabh Bachchan announced her pregnancy, to this day, Aishwarya has been at the receiving end of verbal remarks. And in most cases, it’s been malicious. While the lady who is a regular at Cannes, is going about her business fulfilling her work-related commitments by visiting the French Riviera this year too, our self-styled ‘fashionistas’ have gone on a rampage, passing nasty comments on her weight gain.

Of late, our celeb-obsessed nation, has taken upon itself to make sure our stars ‘represent our country’ in the best ‘fashion’ possible. So, Ash’s subsequent failure to shed weight post childbirth has not been taken too kindly. Apart from comments on social networking sites, one video, which has been viewed more than 50,000 times, shows before and after pictures of Ash accompanied by the sound of an elephant trumpeting.

While artists like MF Hussain have successfully captured the ephemeral beauty and timeless grace of Indian women on canvas, Western cultural influences have ensured that the miracle of a newborn has been eclipsed by the miracle of getting back into your skinny jeans.
Former Mrs India turned fashion designer, Shilpa Reddy, is of the view that the inability to shed postpartum baby fat today has become a social taboo. “The comments on Ash are absolutely nasty and demeaning. It has become mandatory for women in showbiz these days to shed postpartum weight. It is unnatural.” Not so long ago, Shilpa turned heads when she made public appearances looking gorgeous, months after the birth of her son. “I have always been into fitness and I’m genetically blessed. I don’t put on too much weight. Shedding those extra kilos was not difficult for me. Every woman reacts differently to childbirth – some lose weight easily, others don’t. But losing weight is the last thing on a mother’s mind. All she cares about is the wellbeing of her child. Ditto with Ash. Give her some time, she’ll bounce back. Till then, let her enjoy motherhood,” says Reddy.

Curse of the double chin
For women in showbiz, there is intense pressure to stay gorgeous round the clock. One may not be talked about for their talent, but comments on looks are a sure shot. Designer Asmita Marwa, mother to a teen, voices a similar opinion. “I think everyone expects a little too much from Ash. She is human after all. The whole concept of ‘Yummy Mummy’ is a western phenomenon. It’s not Indian or natural,” opines the designer. Recalling instances where her work took a backseat and her looks gained precedence, Asmita says, “There have been so many times when people meet my son and then forget to discuss my work. All they ask me is how do I manage to look the way I do, despite being a mom to a teen. My work completely takes a backseat. It’s very shallow,” she remarks.

The natural path
While the nation is obsessing over Ash’s weight gain, doctors are supporting her style of motherhood. “From a nutritional point of view, it’s not healthy for a lactating mother to go on a strict diet immediately after childbirth, because you need to nurse the child. Ash is nursing her baby, so she is eating well, hence the weight gain. It’s absolutely normal,” says Dr Amrit Shaluja, gynecologist and obstetrician.

Meanwhile, Shilpa recollects instances where women don’t nurse their child for fear of weight gain. “I know women who do not nurse their newborn babies because they are busy working out and following a strict diet. Motherhood takes a backseat and getting into your 26 inches jeans becomes a priority.”

But trying to lose weight post childbirth is not unnatural, feel doctors, if you keep nutrition in mind. “Working out is fine, as long as the mother is getting all her nutritional requirements,” says Dr Shaluja.

Shilpa too shares a similar opinion. “If you have help at home and people to look after your child, then getting some ‘me’ time in the gym is fine. As for me, I make sure I have the energy from sunrise to sunset as there is so much to do – play with my son, chat with my husband, take care of my dogs and go to work. Yes, I do keep fit, but not at the cost of my family life,” quips Shilpa.

Asmita too confesses at not forgoing a single meal to look good. “I have never skipped a meal or dieted. I lost my post baby weight naturally. Celebs abroad get external help to look good, so why should we sweat over Ash?” she asks. And Marwa suggests a few sartorial choices for Ash on the Cannes red carpet. “Ash should go with saris for the red carpet. She will look stunning.”

Actress Shabana Azmi Friday said she doesn`t have a problem with item numbers but they should be situational.“I have far less problem with women doing item numbers than them falling on men`s feet. Item numbers will continue to happen. It is part of what women do and what they are. Whether it is required on the situation or not that matters,” she said during the release of book ‘Mother, Maiden, Mistress’ written by Bhawana Somaya, Supriya Madangarli and Jigna Kothari.

“For example, `Bidi Jala Le` of `Omkara` was fantastically written. It should not be like they are surrendering to a male,” said Shabana.
Actress Parineeti Chopra, who was also there, said: “Item song `Jalla Walah` in `Ishqzaade` which had two girls who are dancing in front of men was not done to titillate men. I am not saying item numbers should b eradicated…I hope in next 5 years, we don`t get to see any more songs like this.”

The victim in the molestation case involving Royal Challengers Bangalore player Luke Pomersbach has served a legal notice to team director Sidhartha Mallya.US national Zohal Hameed has complained to police that Pomersbach had molested her and beaten her fiancé at a five-star hotel in Delhi on Thursday night. Following the complaint, the player was arrested but released on a day’s bail later.

Defending the player, Mallya had questioned the victim’s character.
As per reports, Hameed has sent a legal notice to Mallya seeking unconditional apology for his remarks made on Twitter.The victim is also planning to lodge a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women against Sidhartha Mallya. Delhi Commission for Women head Barkha Singh has meanwhile said that Mallya should apologise for his remarks.

Also today, Luke Pomersbach will again appear in a Delhi court. The court will decide whether the Australian player’s bail should be extended or he should be sent to police custody. The Australian cricketer, arrested on charges of molesting an American woman in a hotel Thursday night, was on Friday granted interim bail for a day by the Delhi court.

Pomersbach, who has had a history of brawls and brush with police in his country, and accused of outraging the modesty of a woman here Thursday night after a post-match party, was granted relief by Metropolitan Magistrate Navita Kumari Bagha.

The magistrate directed the Delhi Police to bring the CCTV footage from the hotel on Saturday along with the medical records showing the nature of injury caused to the woman`s fiance Sahil, who is admitted in ICU in a private hospital here after being allegedly beaten by Pomersbach.

He says, “This franchise (OUATIM) is a very entertaining franchise – we don’t have the usual blood and gore that is associated with the underworld – our world is larger than life and we focus on the underworld that existed during 70s and 80s, and with the sequel, we want to bring back the romantic triangle set in the Mumbai underworld,” adding, “The story connects to the point in the 80s where the underworld was fascinated with the women in Bollywood and the starlets in B-Town too were attracted to smugglers and dons. So we have Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan as the gangsters and Sonakshi Sinha as the starlet.”

So does Sonakshi really plays Mandakini’s role or her character is a take off from the starlet’s life? “There is a lot of fact-meets-fiction in the sequel. In fact there is more of fiction than facts in the second part, but yes, Sonakshi plays the moll,” says Milan. But why Sonakshi? “Because Sonakshi has a very Indian sex appeal. I had met her before “Dabangg” released. I had gone to Salman’s house for dinner and the whole team of “Dabangg” was there – it was at Salman’s place where I saw Sonakshi and was awestruck by her simplicity and grace. A lot of my casting is instinctive and when I saw Sonakshi, I felt she would be well-suited the role of a demure girl, who comes to the city of dreams to make a name for herself,” says the director.

But more than Sona, it is Imran Khan and his role in the sequel that has Milan super excited. “You wait and watch for Imran. I have a feeling that our sequel will do to Imran, what “The Dirty Picture” did to Vidya Balan,” gushes Milan, as he goes on to explain why he thinks Imran fits the bill. “We chose Imran because of his mass appeal. He is extremely popular among young girls and the college going crowd, but with the sequel, he will be seen in an entirely different form. This is exactly what we did with Vidya – we gave her a different colour that was out of her comfort zone.

Imran too will be seen in something that’s in stark contrast to his image. His character has humour, action, witty one-liners and flamboyance, but he plays a typical sadak chhaap gangster with a heart of gold,” shares Milan.
